One difference, perhaps. Newspapers were also harmed by a surprising willingness of the masses to not care about quality — whether something provided by the newspaper or its newer competitors was true or false. Software has to function correctly. It has to deliver value. So at least that’s a market test on its upstart competitors.

Good call out. I agree what software has more longevity.

Specifically to VMS type businesses, it's typical where it takes on same characteristics as metropolitan newspapers whereby the top 1-2 players takes the vast majority of the users. It consolidates and plays out that way. I would say newspapers back in the golden era was even more winner-take-all.
